1977 SALVAGED HARDWARE AND DOOR DETAIL (the whole studio was built by Mary from salvaged materials with the help of her cousin who did the framing). Red used consistently in all studios.
Mary’s studios have always evolved out of her necessity to create, wherever possible.
“It is not a house of perfect taste. But it is made from scraps and contributions and materials on hand. It is colorful, cozy, inconspicuous but not without charm. Above all it is my own roof where I find solitude and beauty in living, both of which my nature requires. The glass is exposed not only to the peace of the woods, but to full sun all day. Even in my 8’ x 12’ space I have room for small work in clay.”—from a letter home, February 25, 1957
2019 VIEW OUT OF THE STUDIO and into the “peace of the woods”
Her current studio, on the edge of the Columbia River, Oregon, was created in a similar spirit: hand-built in 1977 by Mary and her cousin with mostly salvaged materials. A gallery building was added adjacent to the studio for viewings and storage of finished work.
Remnants, studies, sketches from past projects, controllable light and works in progress layer the studio with the wisdom of a master sculptor. Tools made by hand, equipment for managing materials and a vast supply of carving, drawing and sculpting supplies are organized to meet the needs of a productive sculptor.

The studio is situated in a location that allows for close inspection of nature, quiet reflection as a human being and member of local community.
2019 LIZARD ON WALNUT SLAB Work In Progress. Example of Mary interpreting an unappreciated form in nature and reducing it to the essence while working directly with the dictates of permanent materials in an honest, imaginative way.
